OUR PUB
McCafferty’s Bar is situated on the “Mountain Top” which is only a couple of miles from the hub of Letterkenny town centre in Co. Donegal. The overall look and feel of this pub is unashamedly traditional from its stone fronted, thatched roofed exterior to its cosy interior boasting open fires and umpteen comfortable nooks in which to hide away. It is also home to an impressive collection of genuine (no reproductions here) old Irish pub antiques and memorabilia from whiskey and porter mirrors and posters to the more specialist old glass blown urns and Carltonware ornamentation. There is nothing showy about the fit out – this is an honest country pub interior where natural materials and copious wood abound and the only real embellishment comes by way of colourful leaded glass panels.
In the summer, it is an excellent place to pull up a bench and sit outside in order to escape the hustle and bustle of the hum drum. You’ll probably find that you’re not alone – lots of people use this space to sit out, lie out, throw down a blanket or even picnic. Before you, in the foreground are endless rolling hills of working farms and in the distance you’ll see the mountainous, rugged landscape of Glenveagh National Park. A stunning horizon punctuated by both mount Errigal and Muckish. A vista that’s good for the soul and if there were an accolade for a sunset then, on the right day, you’re on for an all Ireland here every time.
In the winter it gets even better with two fires to bring a warm glow in the harshest of weather and an even warmer welcome. We are rightfully proud of the friendliness and professionalism of our longstanding bar staff and we are certain that their contagious motivation and enthusiasm will rub off on you. Whether it’s with the family, a group of friends, a celebration or perhaps something a bit more intimate then you have definitely come to the right place.
Interestingly McCafferty’s is also quite possibly the only public house in the country which has been designed, built and is now run by the same family. This is not a plasma palace, this is a real pub where the focus is on conversation, atmosphere, ambience and above all quality – there are no TV’s, pool tables or other foibles to distract the discerning drinker here. And when it comes to a pint we are unrivalled – you may, with luck, find our equal but we are never bettered and that’s a guarantee! We have had a bespoke beer cooling machine built, which has been tailor made to our own specific stringent requirements. We also personally undertake the cleaning of our own lines on a weekly, not monthly, basis.
Opened now for approximately 20 years and with a string of prestigious Black & White industry awards, which included – the award for the best pub in Donegal for four years running, the best newcomer – in all of Ireland and last year we were the proud winners with the coveted Black & White Best Pub in Ulster award! We should like to thank the critics, pundits and judges but most importantly our excellent regulars and hardworking staff for helping to put McCafferty’s firmly on the map here in Donegal
